FAQ & Troubleshooting
Here are solutions to the most common questions and issues related to the Import EAN UPC Barcodes plugin.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I upload the same CSV file twice?
The plugin has strict duplicate prevention built-in. If you upload a file containing barcodes that are already in the pool or already assigned to products, the plugin will recognize them as duplicates and safely skip them during the import process.
Why are my variable parent products not getting barcodes?
This is intentional. In WooCommerce, a variable parent product is a container; it is not a physical item you sell or ship. Only the individual variations (the physical items in different sizes, colors, etc.) receive barcodes. When you run a bulk assignment, the plugin automatically targets the variations and skips the parent containers.
Can I change my prefix later?
Yes, you can change your generator prefix at any time in the New Products & Settings tab. Changing the prefix will only affect codes generated from that point forward. It will not alter or recalculate barcodes that have already been assigned to products.
Will the plugin overwrite my existing SKUs or Barcodes?
By default, no. If the Skip Filled Destination Fields setting is enabled (which it is by default), the plugin will check if a product already has a value in the chosen destination field before assigning a code. If a value exists, the product is skipped.
Troubleshooting
The import progress bar is stuck
Because imports and bulk assignments run in the background, the UI progress bar simply polls the server for status updates.
- Refresh the page. If the job is still running in the background, the progress bar will reappear and resume updating.
- Check your site health. The background queue relies on standard WordPress loopback requests. If your server is blocking loopback requests, background jobs cannot process.
- Check the Import Log tab for any specific error messages regarding file parsing or database connections.
Barcodes are missing leading zeros in Excel
If you open your CSV file in Microsoft Excel and your barcodes start with a zero (e.g., 098234762912), Excel will often format the column as a number and strip the leading zero.
- Solution: Always format the barcode column in Excel as Text before you paste or type your barcodes, or use a plain text editor to modify your CSV files to preserve leading zeros.
